Welcome to the new and improved Essential Album of the Week discussion thread! Every Wednesday we will discuss an album from our Last Time: This Week: - Stream/Purchase Background/Description (courtesy of iTunes) In 1995, Death Row Records was on a crazy roll. The back-to-back releases of The Chronic and Doggystyle had transformed America's youth into an army of blunt smoking, gin-and-juice sipping G funk fanatics, and the intoxicating sounds of Dr. Dre's keyboard grooves wafted out of cars from Long Beach to Maine. After co-starring on both of those albums, Tha Dogg Pound — Daz and Kurupt — were more than ready to go for theirs, and had already developed the fanbase needed for instant success. Though not as huge as its predecessors, Dogg Food still debuted at #1, and went multi-platinum, thanks to the Snoop-assisted single and West Coast/East Coast beef instigator 'New York, New York' as well as the ultra-smooth bedroom jam 'Let's Play House' featuring Michel'le and Nate Dogg.
Produced entirely by Daz, the music here is just what you would expect/hope for, a collection of watery synths, ferociously funky bass, and snapping beats, perfectly suiting the tag-team rhymes — a non-stop exercise in Cali gangsta-ism, overflowing with casually violent threats, XXX-rated sex rhymes, and Crip pride. Guidelines This is an open thread for you to share your thoughts on the album. Avoid vague statements of praise or criticism.
This is your chance to practice being a critic. It's fine for you to drop by just to say you love the album, but let's try and step it up a bit!!! How has this album affected hip-hop? WHY do you like this tape? What are the best tracks? Do you think it deserves the praise it gets?
Is it the first time you've listened to it? What's your first impression? Have you listened to the artist before? Explain why you like it or why you don't. DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT BEING LATE!!!! Discussion throughout the week is encouraged. Also my bad for delaying this so long, school has kicked my ass and I just had to deal with that first Next week's EAOTW will be GZA - Liquid Swords.
This album to me is so important to landmark 2 of the most overlooked hip hop artists ever nowadays. I'm sure back then people praised Kurupts incredible bars and delivery and Daz' phenomenal g funk production; but I hardly ever hear their names brought up amongst the best rappers/producers. I think Daz especially needs more credit, he's honestly on right about the same level as Dre. On this album Kurupt gives one of the most show stealing performances ever, his verses are electric and hold a lot of weight based off technical ability. The only think I have against this album are the abundance of sex songs and skits, otherwise this is near perfect West coast hip hop. I 100% believe this is a landmark G-Funk album up there with The Chronic and Doggystyle.
I think Daz especially needs more credit, he's honestly on right about the same level as Dre. Problem is that a lot of the beats people think are Dre's and give Dre credit for when ranking him as one of the GOAT producers.they're actually Daz's beats, sometimes credited, a lot of times not.
Dre is a record producer in the literal sense of the word, in the Quincy Jones/Berry Gordy sense. And one of the best ever. As a pure beat maker, I rank Daz ahead of Dr. Dre and it's not really close. It's been said several times in this thread already, but Daz and Kurupt really are underrated in their influence on gangsta rap and hip-hop in general, especially Daz's production skills. He touched on some of the most memorable Westcoast tracks through the entirety of the 90s, but a lot of people don't know this as producers didn't have as big of personalities and notoriety as they do now back in the day. This is one of my favorite albums of all-time, although I'm biased because I'm from LA and grew up on G-Funk.
It's a landmark album and is the perfect entry for anyone curious to know what G-Funk sounds like and how it originated.
